The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Thierry Wasser conceived Épices Exquises as a study of the ritual itself, that moment in Arabian Peninsula culture when cardamom meets coffee, steam rising, conversation settling into something honest. The 2022 addition to Guerlain's Les Absolus d'Orient collection uses that moment as architecture: bright, aromatic, then deep. The collection's name promises oriental preciousness, and Épices Exquises delivers it through spice rather than resin, cardamom and pink pepper opening the door, coffee and black pepper holding the room's attention, sandalwood and oud deciding how long you'll stay.
The structure is unusual for a spiced oriental: the coffee note doesn't sweeten, it darkens. The black pepper doesn't heat, it grounds. Angelica adds an aromatic, slightly medicinal counter to the cardamom's brightness. The cardamom opens bright and almost citrus-like, quickly joined by the bitter edge of coffee that keeps sweetness at bay. As the fragrance develops, the black pepper emerges with a dry, slightly earthy quality that anchors the composition. The angelica adds an herbal counterpoint that prevents the blend from becoming too heavy.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly, cardamom and angelica hitting bright, almost citrus-like in their sharpness, with pink pepper adding a fleeting floral warmth. Within fifteen minutes, the coffee arrives. Not the roasted sweetness of a morning cup, darker, almost bitter, the way arabica smells from across the room rather than from your hand. Black pepper integrates, smoothing what could have been harsh. By the hour, the cardamom has retreated but not vanished, it lingers in the drydown, a memory of the opening beneath sandalwood's cream. The oud enters quietly, lending a smoky animalism that patchouli then anchors into something earthier, spicier. On skin, expect six to eight hours of evolution. On fabric, the sandalwood-oud base can carry into the next day, a faint warmth on a scarf, the ghost of coffee in the morning.
Cultural impact
As part of Guerlain's Les Absolus d'Orient collection, Épices Exquises joins eight previous expressions of oriental preciousness, each built around a different facet of the genre, wood, smoke, resin, amber. The cardamom-coffee structure offers a distinctive take on the oriental theme, moving beyond the familiar warmth of typical spice blends into something more complex and unexpected. The opening reveals bright cardamom with an almost citrus-like quality, quickly joined by bitter coffee that keeps any sweetness at bay.
