The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Thierry Wasser brought Encens Mythique back in 2019 as part of Les Absolus d'Orient, Guerlain's curated collection of reissued orientals. It had first appeared in 2012 under the Les Déserts d'Orient label. The fragrance builds on a rose note that carries warmth and depth, paired with frankincense that brings smoky, resinous intensity. Together they create a dialogue between floral richness and sacred resin, making the composition both modern and timeless in its approach to oriental perfumery. The pairing anchors the scent in Guerlain's ongoing exploration of orientals while standing apart as something distinctly its own.
What makes this composition unusual is the aldehydes. They open the entire experience with genuine authority, creating a bright, lifted first impression that announces itself clearly. Then the rose and saffron arrive, and the composition shifts into something sharper, spicier, more demanding. The heart, patchouli, pink pepper, vetiver, doesn't soften the opening so much as ground it, adding earthy depth that prevents the rose from becoming purely decorative. The saffron adds a metallic, almost medicinal edge that keeps the floral honest rather than romantic.
The evolution
The opening is aldehydic brightness, crisp, elevated, almost waxy. The rose pushes through with saffron's spice behind it. The heart phase introduces pink pepper and vetiver, which cool the composition slightly, adding an aromatic edge that balances the floral heat. The frankincense arrives in the drydown, smoke curling against warm ambergris. The woody base settles close to the skin, intimate, not projecting. The frankincense and ambergris linger longest, with the composition maintaining its character throughout wear.
Cultural impact
Encens Mythique occupies a specific position in the oriental category. The rose-and-frankincense pairing addresses a contemporary appetite for smoky florals, offering something that sits apart from both blockbuster oud-and-spice constructions and clean modern orientals. It carries a quiet confidence that reads as assured rather than loud, making it a distinctive choice within the broader oriental landscape.
