The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Free Yourself, founded in France in 2023, built its identity around gender-fluid scents and green chemistry. The brand's ethos centers on letting wearers express personal freedom through scent, sourced mindfully and transparently. When Maud Chabanis was invited to translate the feeling of awe into perfume for the 2025 Mindful Collection, she did not reach for easy citrus or safe florals. She assembled a palette that moves from bright Mediterranean opening notes through a heart rich with aromatic depth to a base that lingers quietly. Her goal was not spectacle but precision, building a fragrance that mirrors the psychological arc of experiencing awe: first a rush of intensity, then a settling into something larger than oneself.
The note structure reflects a deliberate philosophy: start with immediate sensory impact, deepen into complexity that rewards attention, end with warmth that stays close. Bergamot and grapefruit open brightly but not loudly, neroli and white tea keep the citrus layer from becoming sweet, and petitgrain prevents any single note from dominating. The heart uses leather not as a statement but as a texture, creating depth that contradicts the freshness of the opening. Orris root bridges phases without forcing them together. The base relies on ambroxan, cedarwood, and white musk to keep warmth intimate rather than projecting.
The evolution
AWE begins with bergamot and grapefruit, two citruses that arrive together with no delay. The bergamot is sun-drenched and aromatic while the grapefruit contributes a tart, almost bitter edge that prevents the opening from feeling sweet. White tea tempers the brightness, adding a cool, watery transparency that makes the first minutes feel like standing in bright sunlight with a fresh breeze. Neroli brings quiet floracy while petitgrain grounds the citrus in green, slightly bitter leaves. As the top notes recede after roughly an hour, the heart emerges. Angelica and herbaceous notes introduce a meditative green quality that feels nothing like the bright opening. Jasmine appears softly, adding complexity without dominance. Leather arrives as a structural surprise, adding textural warmth and pulling the scent away from linear freshness into something more layered. Orris root smooths the transition, its powdery depth bridging floral heart and woody base. The drydown reveals itself fully after three hours.
Cultural impact
Since its 2025 debut, Awe has become a conversation starter among scent‑savvy circles for its bright‑then‑earthy duality. Wearers often cite it as a go‑to for mindful wardrobes, noting its ability to feel both uplifting and grounding without leaning into overtly masculine or feminine tropes. It’s frequently mentioned alongside the brand’s other elemental releases as a modern, gender‑fluid staple.
