The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Gitano is Epicò's ode to the gypsy spirit, not the cliché, but the idea. The founder wanted to capture someone who never quite belongs, who keeps moving, who refuses the settled life. "Being Gypsies in the soul means not being found where the others settle," the brand writes. That restlessness, that freedom, lives in this bottle. Gitano was released in 2022, and it's been turning heads ever since for the sheer boldness of its convictions.
The structure is built for that gypsy energy: warm opening to disorient, then a full-on assault of woods, then a base that lingers like a memory. The combination of Bulgarian rose and labdanum at the top is unusual, labdanum is resinous, almost medicinal, but here it softens the rose, makes it less precious. The heart layers oud and cypriol (also called nagarmotha), both smoky, earthy materials that don't apologize for what they are. What makes Gitano work is the way the jasmine sneaks in, just enough white floral to keep the woods from becoming aggressive. It's the gypsy's embroidered scarf over a leather jacket.
The evolution
The first spray hits like a decision, not a question. Labdanum and Bulgarian rose arrive together, warm and insistent, no citrus freshness to ease you in, no polite preamble. Within ten minutes, the woods take over: oud and cypriol trade off, patchouli adds depth, cedar keeps things from getting too heavy. Jasmine is the quiet player here, slipping in and out like a shadow. The leather hasn't fully announced itself yet, but you can feel it waiting. By the second hour, the base kicks in: amber, sandalwood, guaiac wood, and that animalic note, present, unapologetic, the sweaty skin the reviews mention. This is where Gitano earns its name. The drydown holds for hours. On fabric, it lasts until the next day.
Cultural impact
Gitano occupies a specific space in the modern niche landscape: powerful enough to signal intention, complex enough to reward attention. It's the kind of fragrance that attracts people who want scent to say something, not just smell pleasant. The unisex labeling is earned, not aspirational; it reads equally well on any skin. In a market crowded with safe, crowd-pleasing formulations, Gitano makes no such compromises.
