The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jardin des Mots arrived in 2021 when perfumer Alexandra Carlin set out to create a green fragrance. The composition opens with petitgrain, mandarin, and ginger, all arranged around galbanum's green spine. The petitgrain lends a bitter, slightly woody quality that anchors the brightness of the citrus, while the ginger adds a subtle warmth that lingers at the edges of the opening. Bergamot contributes a fresh, slightly floral brightness without any added sweetness. As the top notes begin to settle, the galbanum continues to assert its presence, bringing a bitter, almost resinous quality that gives the opening its distinctive character.
The green here is galbanum, which brings a distinctive bitter, slightly resinous quality to the opening. This note sets a particular tone for the composition. Petitgrain and mandarin form the citrus foundation, with the petitgrain adding a subtle herbaceous quality that complements the galbanum's sharpness. The combination reads like a garden that refuses to be polite, the citrus brightness offset by the galbanum's assertive character. Then lily of the valley and rose arrive, adding a soft floral dimension that provides contrast to the opening's clarity.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately: petitgrain, mandarin, and ginger arrive together, galbanum's green spine cutting through before the citrus can settle. Bright, sharp, insistent. The bergamot adds a touch of sweetness that attempts to soften the green, but galbanum holds its own through the opening phase. The heart arrives quietly: lily of the valley emerges, then rose, their delicate floral character providing contrast with the opening's assertiveness. The green doesn't disappear; it softens, becoming atmospheric rather than insistent, gradually weaving into the floral heart. White cedarwood arrives in the base alongside white musk, extending the drydown for hours, providing a clean, woody presence that lingers. The sillage moderates after the initial intensity settles, becoming intimate and close.
Cultural impact
Jardin des Mots found its audience in 2021, resonating with wearers drawn to green-floral compositions with a distinctive edge. The fragrance features a galbanum-forward opening that gives it a sharp quality distinct from softer, more conventional entries in the category. The galbanum brings a bitter, almost medicinal sharpness that sets this garden apart from typical green florals. The composition develops through a heart of lily of the valley and rose, which temper the opening's intensity with delicate floral notes. White cedarwood and white musk anchor the base, creating a grounded foundation.
