The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dawn Spencer Hurwitz approaches fragrance like a visual study. Each bottle is a quiet sketch, an intentional composition rather than a commercial statement. Mirabella is her take on the floriental-chypre: a plum and tuberose study that turns animalic, beeswax-drenched, and unapologetically vintage. The density here is deliberate. This isn't a fragrance that whispers. It layers, it lingers, and it asks something of the wearer who chooses it.
What makes this composition distinctive is the vintage floriental tension: sweet and animalic notes pushing against each other while the chypre structure keeps them in place. Castoreum is the tell here. That leather-and-animal warmth is present in a way that feels intentional rather than accidental, a deliberate choice that grounds the entire structure. Beeswax and labdanum add the resinous, balsamic depth that rounds the whole thing into something that actually smells finished rather than just potent. The plum reads ripe. The jasmine sambac reads warm.
The evolution
The opening announces plum and bergamot with a fruity-bright entrance. Fruity, yes, but grounded rather than fleeting. Within minutes the beeswax and animalics arrive, shifting the character from something garden-fresh to something older and more complex. The heart blooms dense and indolic: tuberose absolute leads, jasmine sambac follows, supported by orange blossom, osmanthus, and ylang-ylang. The damask rose and broom root keep it from tipping fully into white floral sweetness. As the florals begin to recede, the base reveals itself with depth and presence. Civet, castoreum, and leather anchor the drydown alongside sandalwood, patchouli, and vanilla. The beeswax persists throughout, threading through every stage. The animalic warmth stays close to the skin, giving the fragrance an intimate quality that doesn't dissipate quickly.
Cultural impact
Mirabella is an unapologetically bold floriental-chypre. Dense natural materials and old-world character define this composition. An unapologetically vintage floriental-chypre, dense with natural materials and old-world character, positioned as something entirely its own. Collectors who appreciate classical perfumery gravitate toward this one. It's a reminder that bold, rich, and animalic can still be done with intention and craft.
