The beginning
Giardini Segreti is the third stop on Dawn Spencer Hurwitz's Italian Journey, a series that translates the sensory textures of specific Italian landscapes into wearable form. The title reads like one too: enclosed, lush, slightly overgrown. It's a limited release from DSH Perfumes. The "secret" in the name isn't decorative. The composition hides its green backbone beneath layers of white floral opulence, revealing itself slowly to anyone paying attention. On first encounter, the neroli and bitter orange open with a sunlit clarity that feels almost dewy, like walking into a walled courtyard early in the morning when everything still holds the night's moisture.
What makes Giardini Segreti distinctive is the tension between two floral languages. The neroli, honeysuckle, and bitter orange offer a bright, sunlit opening that feels almost weightless. But the heart is built on absolute-grade materials: tuberose absolute, gardenia, mimosa absolute, jasmine grandiflorum. These are dense, almost waxy florals with serious weight. Galbanum threads through both the top and base, keeping the composition from dissolving into sweetness. Galbanum is one of perfumery's sharpest green materials, with a bitter, resinous bite that reads like crushed leaves and stems.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are almost entirely citrus-floral: neroli and bitter orange leading, honeysuckle sweetness underneath, galbanum threading through with its sharp green signature. The bergamot adds a brief sparkle before the white florals take over. As the composition settles, the tuberose absolute arrives with real weight, joined by gardenia and jasmine. The mimosa adds a powdery warmth. Orris root grounds everything with a cool, earthy iris note. Rose geranium introduces a slightly herbal edge, keeping the florals from becoming purely sweet. The galbanum persists through this phase, a green wire holding the bouquet together. In the later stages of wear, the florals have softened considerably. The amber and ambergris in the base come forward, warm and slightly saline. Musk arrives with a skin-like softness.
