The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Iris d'Or translates to "Golden Iris", a name that means something in perfumery. The orris root at the heart of this fragrance takes years to develop, earning its nickname "blue gold" through time and patience alone. Sophie Labbé designed Splendida Iris d'Or in 2017 as part of Bvlgari's Splendida collection, a line built around singular ingredients pushed to their most expressive form. Where other Splendida fragrances champion rose or jasmine, this one stakes everything on iris, its powdery coolness, its violet-touched root earthiness, its quiet authority. The brief was clear: find the gold inside the iris and let it shine without apology.
What makes this composition work is the balance between cool and warm. The opening is surprisingly fresh, violet leaf absolute lending a green, almost aquatic brightness. Heliotrope's almond softness and raspberry's subtle fruity sweetness complement the composition, keeping the top register warm rather than sharp. It doesn't smell like a typical floral introduction. It smells like the moment before a garden gets golden. The heart belongs entirely to iris, but Labbé chose not to crowd it.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and dewy. Violet leaf absolute gives it an almost ozonic lift, clean, green, a little aquatic. Underneath, heliotrope's almond softness and raspberry's fruity sweetness keep the top register warm rather than sharp. It reads like morning light through thin curtains. The iris seeps in gradually, replacing the green brightness with its signature powdery-violet character. This is the heart of the fragrance, and it lingers with remarkable presence. Mimosa barely registers as a separate note, more a softening agent than a feature. The drydown is where patience pays off. As the florals begin to settle, tonka bean and sandalwood form a creamy, warm foundation. The powdery accord doesn't disappear, it deepens, taking on a slightly woody, slightly sweet quality that stays close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Splendida Iris d'Or occupies a quieter corner of the iris fragrance conversation. The Splendida line has never aimed for niche provocation. It aims for polished, wearable luxury, and this composition delivers that reliably. The warmth from heliotrope and tonka bean softens the iris into something approachable, a daily fragrance rather than a statement piece. The powdery heart feels grounded rather than fleeting, and the creamy drydown suggests a composition built for repeat wear rather than singular impact.
