The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vaniteese arrived in 2023 as part of a trio, Vedette, Vaniteese, Victresse, the first new releases from Dita Von Teese in over a decade. The name itself is a play on vanity, a wink at the self-possession that runs through everything she creates. Perfumer Alexandre Illan built this one around the tension between powdery softness and something more grounded, more permanent. Mimosa and hawthorn gave the opening its characteristic powder; orris root and lilac added the floral depth. Cashmere wood and vetiver in the base ensured it would stay close, intimate, lingering long after the first spray.
The ambrette seed is the quiet key here. Also called musk mallow, it provides a musky creaminess that bridges the powdery top notes and the earthy base without adding any animalic weight. Combined with the cashmere wood, a synthetic molecule that smells exactly like its name suggests, soft and woody without any harsh edges, it creates a drydown that feels like warm skin, not a fragrance wearing a person. The orris root adds iris powder, that distinctive violet-dust quality that elevates the mimosa from sweet to something more complex, more considered.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: mimosa and hawthorn, powdery and bright, with orange blossom threading sweetness through the air. It doesn't blast, it arrives. Within fifteen minutes, the orris and lilac take over, the floral heart settling into something softer, more intimate. The aldehydic sparkle from the hawthorn fades but never disappears entirely; it keeps the florals from becoming heavy. By the second hour, the base notes have emerged: musk and cashmere wood wrapping around the vetiver, creating a skin-close warmth that most people will catch only if they're standing close. Lasts four to six hours on most skin types, with moderate sillage that means it stays your secret unless you want it known.
Cultural impact
Vaniteese joins a 2023 trio, Vedette, Vaniteese, Victresse, marking the brand's return after a decade without new releases. The three fragrances capture different facets of the femme totale archetype, with Vaniteese occupying the most classically feminine territory: powdery, floral, intimate. Wearers describe it as old Hollywood glamour distilled into a bottle, with the aldehydic sparkle and powdery iris that defined an era of American perfumery.
