    Alexandre Illan

Alexandre Illan built his foundation in Grasse, training at Mane's in-house perfumery school before joining Symrise in 2018 as part of the Aroma Molecules team in Holzminden, Germany. Working within a major fragrance house has not dulled his edge. Symrise gave him creative freedom, and he has used it to work across a striking range—from small independent labels like Der Duft to marquee collaborations including Chantal Thomass and IKKS. The project that pushed him into wider view, however, was the Rammstein fragrance line, a provocative series that required him to navigate raw, animalic territory with the same precision he brings to delicate, intimate compositions. Critics have noted the breadth of his register. His portfolio spans roughly 35 fragrances and counting.

    The signature

    How Alexandre composes

Unconventional note combinations are where Illan operates most comfortably. He juxtaposes sweetness against animalic warmth, delicate florals against industrial synthetics, pulling these contrasts into coherent, memorable compositions. His work with the Rammstein line showcased a willingness to lean into bold, provocative territory without sacrificing wearability. At the softer end of the spectrum, his Chantal Thomass collaborations reveal a lighter hand and a taste for allure. Whether building a heavy sillage or something more restrained, he seems to prioritize texture and emotional resonance over any single ingredient.

    Philosophy

    What drives Alexandre

Illan treats perfumery less like a craft and more like a playground for emotion. He blends natural and synthetic materials without hierarchy, pursuing compositions that feel either very concrete or deliberately abstract depending on the brief. Contrasting elements define his creative process—he seeks the surprise that comes when opposing notes collide. The goal is not to please universally but to evoke something genuine, even if it challenges expectations. "The human aspect is the most exciting about it," he has said, describing the exchange of ideas at events like the World Perfumery Congress. That openness to experience, not just ingredients, shapes every formula.
