The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Composed by perfumer Alexandre Illan, Engel Pure is a fragrance that leads with grapefruit and Sichuan pepper, replacing expected floral notes with something more direct and confrontational. The name suggests purity, but the composition reads as a deliberate counter to softness, bright citrus, green herbal heart, and vetiver's earthy persistence hold the structure together. There is no sweetness here, no florals, no compromise. It's a clear, sharp scent that earns its name by refusing the obvious path, offering an aromatic profile built around contrast and intensity rather than gentle appeal. The vetiver grounds the composition, lending a mineral earthiness that balances the citrus brightness and adds depth to the herbal middle notes.
The composition is built around a structural choice: vetiver anchors both the heart and the base, creating a continuous thread that connects the opening to the final drydown rather than treating the base as a separate chapter. Hemp reinforces this continuity, appearing across the pyramid to sustain the fragrance's green, slightly resinous character throughout the wear. Sichuan pepper introduces a numbing, tingling quality that makes the citrus feel electric rather than sweet, while the grapefruit is deliberately bitter, not juicy, deliberately sharp rather than soft.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately: grapefruit zest and Sichuan pepper arriving together, the pepper's slight numbing quality making the citrus feel electric rather than sweet. The grapefruit is bitter, clean, sharp in its clarity. As the composition evolves, hemp and vetiver move in, shifting the sensation from sharp to green. The vetiver cools the composition, adding its mineral, earthy quality, while the hemp brings an herbal, slightly resinous character that deepens the impression. This is the meditative phase, calm, grounded, unhurried. The drydown settles into vetiver's woody territory, the grapefruit still faintly present. The hemp's green character persists, and there's a subtle resinous warmth from elemi that gives the final phase some body. On skin the next day, the trace is vetiver-rich, earthy, slightly smoky, still present.
Cultural impact
Rammstein built their fragrance line around the same confrontational energy as their music, Kokain's synthetic cocaine note, Pussy's deliberately provocative naming. Engel Pure carries the band's uncompromising aesthetic while presenting a different character, green, vetiver-forward, with hemp adding complexity without aggression. The composition balances provocative branding with a wearable structure, making it stand out within the line. That balance is what makes this fragrance distinctive: the band maintains its edge while delivering something that works across different contexts and preferences.
