The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nylaia is part of Bvlgari's Le Gemme collection, the house's jewelry-box approach applied to fragrance. Each scent in the line is meant to be worn like a piece you select rather than a default you reach for. Alberto Morillas built Nylaia around iris as the focal point, pulling jasmine sambac into the heart for warmth and creaminess, and anchoring the drydown with Siam benzoin, white musk, and vanilla for a powdery close-to-skin finish that stays intimate. The iris brings a cool, violet-soft quality that sits close to the skin, while the jasmine sambac adds a rounded warmth that keeps the composition from reading as cold. The benzoin and vanilla together create a soft, resinous sweetness that lingers in the drydown.
The orris root in the base is where Nylaia's character lives. Iris carries a natural powdery quality, cool, violet-soft, slightly metallic, and here it gets to lead. The jasmine sambac adds a warm creaminess that prevents the iris from reading as cold. And the Siam benzoin brings a resinous sweetness that rounds the drydown into something soft and wearable. White musk and ambergris add a clean animalic undertone that keeps the powder from reading as detergent.
The evolution
The opening hits pink pepper and bergamot first, clean, bright, briefly sharp. Hedione adds a translucent floral quality that lifts the peach. The iris arrives and the fragrance transforms, the powdery iris deepening as the jasmine sambac warms the heart. The drydown is where Nylaia earns its reputation. Vanilla, sandalwood, and white musk create a close-to-skin warmth that lingers for hours. Ambergris adds a clean animalic undertone. The benzoin gives it resinous depth. The powdery iris remains present underneath, quiet but persistent, a thread that runs through the entire composition and gives Nylaia its distinctive character.
Cultural impact
Nylaia occupies a specific space in the iris-amber category, powdery without being precious, warm without being heavy. The Le Gemme line is where Bvlgari treats fragrance as jewelry, and Nylaia fits that positioning: something chosen carefully, worn close, appreciated by those who notice. The fragrance delivers on the luxury promise, its carefully constructed composition offering a refined experience that feels both intimate and distinctive.
