The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Obьлепиха и крыжовник sits at the center of Brocard's portfolio, a fragrance built around sea buckthorn and gooseberry, two sour-edged fruits that don't often find their way into mainstream perfumery. Released in 2018, the composition is the work of Sylvie Fischer, who pairs the berries' aggressive tartness with a softer floral heart to keep the scent from reading as one-note. The trick, and what makes the fragrance worth paying attention to, is balance. The opening snaps with an almost medicinal brightness, the kind of scent that wakes you up before you've finished your first cup of coffee, but it settles quickly into something rounder.
Sea buckthorn carries a sharp, oily brightness that can easily take over a composition. On its own the note reads almost pharmaceutical, intense and slightly bitter in a way that demands careful handling. Gooseberry brings its own complications, a green-tart snap that can flatten into something candy-like if the perfumer isn't paying attention. Fischer threads them with pineapple and mandarin, which amplify the opening's sour-sweet tension and give the fruit a juicier, rounder quality.
The evolution
The opening is loud, almost confrontational. Sea buckthorn cuts through with its oily, metallic brightness, and the pineapple underneath pushes everything toward tropical before the gooseberry pulls it back to tart. There's a powdery softness already trying to break through underneath the fruit, but for the first stretch the berries win. As the composition develops, the citrus notes burn off and the peach blossom takes over, creamy and slightly soapy, the kind of skin-clean scent you'd associate with expensive hand soap. Apple blossom adds a green, watery edge that keeps the heart from going too round or too sweet. The transition from the bright, sharp opening into the floral heart feels deliberate, like watching the fruit notes slowly hand the composition over to something quieter. Eventually the musk and cedar settle in, dry and unobtrusive.
Cultural impact
Obьлепиха и крыжовник offers something the Western fruity-floral catalog rarely does: real tartness. Sea buckthorn and gooseberry both lean sour, and the composition doesn't sand down those edges to make the scent more palatable. The pineapple and mandarin sweeten the opening just enough to keep it from feeling austere, while the peony and apple blossom round out the heart without adding the powdery sweetness that dominates so many mainstream berry fragrances. The drydown, built on musk and cedar, keeps the whole thing grounded and clean.
