The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Aromaty Prirody collection launched by Brocard in 2017 is a celebration of ingredients native to the Russian landscape. Antonovka and Wild Strawberry takes two elements that feel essential to the region's character: the Antonovka apple, with its unmistakable tartness, and wild strawberry. Morgane Colliot, the perfumer behind the composition, had a clear directive: honor both ingredients without letting either dominate. The result is a fragrance that opens like walking into an orchard and settles into something warmer, the kind that feels familiar even if you've never smelled it before. The apple brings a crisp, green brightness while the strawberry softens the edges without becoming overly sweet. The two work in balance, each supporting the other rather than competing for attention.
What makes this composition interesting is the tension between the apple and the strawberry. Antonovka is inherently acidic, it has that sharp bite that most 'apple' fragrances smooth out entirely. Here, the tartness stays. It's what makes the opening feel alive rather than just sweet. Wild strawberry brings something different than cultivated varieties: a slight wildness, a herbal undertone that keeps the fruit from becoming syrupy. The toffee and vanilla in the heart shift the composition from fresh to gourmand, but the cinnamon in the base prevents it from falling into full dessert territory. It's a careful balance, sweet enough to comfort, tart enough to keep it interesting.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the apple. Lemon brightens it, but the Antonovka's natural acidity is the star, that sharp, almost green bite that makes the opening feel crisp rather than sweet. The apple retains its tart backbone even as other elements begin to appear. The strawberry arrives gradually, not announcing itself but becoming more present as the top notes begin to fade. As the fragrance develops, the heart emerges with toffee and rose, and carnation adds a subtle spiced quality that gives depth. The vanilla appears as the composition settles, bringing warmth and sweetness that balances the earlier tartness. Musk and cinnamon create a warm trail that lingers on the skin. What lingers is a soft, sweet residue that makes you catch your wrist and smile, a gentle reminder of the fragrance's presence.
Cultural impact
The Aromaty Prirody collection presents Brocard as a house interested in place and memory rather than trend-chasing. Antonovka and Wild Strawberry fits within this framework, using ingredients that feel specific and intentional rather than generic. The apple-strawberry pairing avoids the typical fruity-floral playbook, offering something that stands apart from mainstream options. Those drawn to the fragrance tend to appreciate its distinctive character, finding in it a scent that feels genuine rather than calculated.
