The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Brocard is a Russian fragrance house that prefers depth over declaration. In 2019 the house collaborated with Aliénor Massenet, a perfumer who structures her compositions around contrast and restraint. Black Swan emerged from a simple brief: beauty with an edge. The collaboration brought Massenet's understanding of balance to Brocard's Russian sensibility, resulting in a fragrance that feels both intimate and composed, like something observed rather than performed.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of controlled contrast. Almond and heliotrope share a kinship that creates continuity through the heart, while bergamot prevents the opening from becoming too sweet. Vetiver and patchouli anchor the composition with their earthiness, preventing the florals from floating away entirely. The result is a fragrance where each note has purpose, where nothing is decorative without function, and where the whole creates an impression of studied elegance.
The evolution
Black Swan's evolution follows a clear arc from the first spray to the final drydown. It begins with the crispness of bergamot meeting almond's warmth, hazelnut leaf adding a brief green interruption. Within minutes the heart takes over, orchid and heliotrope creating a powdery, slightly sweet atmosphere that Rose and violet amplify into something lush. The transition to the base is gradual, vetiver and patchouli introducing earthiness that grounds the florals before sandalwood arrives to smooth everything into a warm, lasting finish.
Cultural impact
The fragrance leans chypre, with a note pyramid that moves in clear phases. Nutty top notes give way to a powdery floral heart, and the base settles into woody warmth. The structure itself suggests a kind of deliberate elegance. Hazelnut and almond open the composition with an edible quality, but without overt sweetness. Rose, orchid, and violet create a soft, powdery heart. Patchouli and sandalwood ground everything in the base. There's an interplay of warm and cool, sweet and bitter. The fragrance doesn't announce itself. It works quietly, finding its place on skin with restraint rather than force.
