Why it exists.
The beginning
Patrice Martin composed Elegantnost in 2016 for Brocard, and the brief seems clear: a feminine composition that earns its grace rather than announcing it. He built the fragrance with a careful hand, layering fruit at the top, powdery florals through the heart, and praline warmth at the base, then refining each layer until the sweetness stopped feeling like a concession. The opening is bright and inviting, with a juicy fruit accord that carries a clean, almost crystalline lift. As the hours pass, that brightness softens into a plush bed of iris and violet, their powdery textures settling into the skin like a faint blush of suede. Eventually the praline rises, nutty and caramelized, sweet but never cloying, wrapping the florals in a golden haze that lingers well into the drydown.
At the center of Elegantnost sits a violet-iris axis that gives the composition its quiet authority. Violet leaf brings a cool, almost cucumber-edged sharpness that keeps the raspberry from tipping into jam territory, lending the top a green snap that cuts through the sweetness before it can settle into something syrupy. Iris contributes a cool, mineral powder, dry and faintly metallic, that gives the heart its lifted, almost starched quality. The praline base is the bridge: nutty, caramelized, but never heavy enough to overpower the florals above it.
The evolution
The first 30 minutes belong to the fruit. Raspberry leads, bright and slightly jammy, with blackcurrant adding a tart green edge and apple rounding it out into something almost like biting into a cold orchard. Then the violet takes over, and the whole composition shifts register. What was sweet becomes soft, almost dusty, as iris joins to thicken the powder. Jasmine whispers underneath but never shouts. By the third hour, the gourmand base has settled in: praline toasted and warm, vanilla creamy without being cloying, and a clean musk that keeps everything lifted. The 4-6 hour mark finds it still humming on skin, softer now, more skin-like, with the praline-vanilla drydown clinging to scarves and sweaters well into the next day.
Cultural impact
Elegantnost entered the fragrance market in 2016 as a composition that took the gourmand template and gave it a distinctly powdered twist. Rather than the syrup-heavy direction that many sweet fragrances of that period leaned toward, this one built its character around the cool, green snap of violet leaf and the dry, suede-like texture of iris, two notes that anchor the sugar in something more grown-up and wearable.
