The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vatinee is Dmitry Bortnikoff's ode to someone, a name whispered in the brand's own copy as "Vatiny," the person whose smile inspired the composition. The fragrance arrived in 2020 as something different from the house's oud-forward attars: a sunny, approachable scent that traded darkness for clarity. Bortnikoff built the house on rare natural materials and unapologetic depth. The result brings that same respect for ingredients to a brighter, more luminous register. Four citrus top notes announce themselves without shouting, each one lending the composition a distinct character that refuses to tip into cleaning-product territory. A floral heart softens the brightness, preventing sharpness while maintaining the overall glow.
The note structure is unusually balanced for a niche house that made its name on intensity. Most compositions lead with one dominant accord; Vatinee spreads its cards evenly across citrus, white florals, and woody warmth. Ylang-ylang bridges the middle ground between the bright opening and the creamy sandalwood-guaiac base, not quite tropical, not quite powdery, sitting in that space where the flower earns its reputation for being simultaneously sensual and fresh. The green tea note is the quiet choice here: it keeps the florals grounded without adding another loud voice to the composition. It's restraint as a statement.
The evolution
The opening arrives with a burst of grapefruit and bergamot, sweet orange adding roundness so the citrus never reads as cleaning product. It's sharp, present, immediate. As the citrus evolves, the lilies-of-the-valley begin to surface through the brightness, and the ylang-ylang starts its slow unfurling, tempering the sharpness with delicate floral sweetness. The citrus recedes but doesn't disappear, creating a lingering freshness beneath the florals as tuberose and sandalwood take their turn at the forefront of the composition. The drydown is where Vatinee earns its house credentials, creamy and warm, intimate and lingering, a final whisper of guaiac wood that fades on its own time.
Cultural impact
Vatinee offers a sunny counterpoint to the house's oud-centric identity, proving that natural materials and accessibility can coexist in a single composition. The fragrance features bright citrus that thrives in warmth, close projection suited to intimate spaces, and a warmth that lingers without announcing itself. Its character speaks to a preference for brightness and intimacy over projection and drama. The composition maintains the brand's signature depth while introducing a more approachable register, creating a luminous alternative that stays true to the house's philosophy of natural ingredients and unapologetic complexity.
