The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Park Royal takes its name from the historic Park Royal district of west London, an area where industrial ambition once brushed against sprawling green spaces. Anglia Perfumery, founded in 2015, often translates such British locales into scent, and perfumer William Thomson set out to capture the particular atmosphere of places where city and nature meet in uneasy harmony. The eucalyptus and lemon opening reflects that initial collision of urban clarity and green freshness, an immediate impression that does not linger long before giving way to other considerations.
William Thomson selected the eucalyptus and lemon opening specifically to evoke the sensation of cool morning air moving through an industrial area adjacent to parkland. The choice of labdanum for the heart reflects a desire to move away from common floral heart notes toward something more resinous and grounded, appropriate for a fragrance named after a place of material production and green persistence. Nutmeg and clove were chosen to add warmth without sweetness, keeping the heart phase contemplative rather than inviting.
The evolution
The fragrance moves in stages that mirror the changing character of a place like Park Royal through the day. The opening eucalyptus and lemon arrive like crisp morning air, sharp and energizing, with neroli providing an almost hidden floral note that hints at the parks hidden among the industrial estates. Within the heart phase, labdanum thickens the composition with its resinous depth, while nutmeg and clove introduce a spiced warmth that feels like stepping into a workshop or tavern. This is the heart where the industrial character reveals itself, in warmth and shadow rather than cold functionality. The drydown then finds its rest in moss and woody notes, an earthy conclusion that speaks to the green spaces reclaiming their territory after the industrial activity fades. Amber patches the transition with sweetness, and patchouli adds a persistent earthy quality that keeps the fragrance grounded in its British sense of place and season.
Cultural impact
Since its 1929 release, Park Royal has quietly become a favourite among collectors who appreciate Anglia Perfumery’s dedication to British-inspired narratives. Wearers often note its ability to evoke historic parklands, making it a go-to for those seeking a scent that feels both rooted and refined, without the flash of mainstream fougères.
