The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Avant-Garde Air arrived in 2019 as part of And Other Stories' growing fragrance portfolio, a label that treats scent the way its clothes treat fabric. This particular release sits firmly in the floral-fruity register, built around a violet-iris heart that feels more European than Scandinavian, more boutique than mass. On first spray, the violet opens with a soft, almost candied sweetness, that confectionery shimmer characteristic of quality violet reconstructions. Iris settles in quickly, bringing its powdery, root-vegetable coolness, the kind of refined suede effect that makes the composition feel grown-up rather than girlish.
What makes this composition worth noticing is the structural choice. Violet and iris are the heart, and that pairing almost always reads powdery, sometimes dusty, sometimes retro. Here the brown sugar in the base answers that with something edible and warm, so the powder never tips into austerity. The patchouli grounds the iris rather than adding earthiness, which keeps the whole thing from drifting into pure gourmand. Freesia at the top adds a green snap that prevents the peach from going syrupy, a small but deliberate counterweight. It's a calibrated balance: sweet without losing structure, floral without losing warmth.
The evolution
On skin, the peach and mandarin do their bright, almost candy-like work for the first 15 minutes, and the freesia cuts through with a cool, slightly green edge. By the 30-minute mark the violets arrive, soft and unmistakably powdery, and the iris follows close behind, giving the whole composition a suede-like depth. This is the phase that defines it. The brown sugar starts showing up around the two-hour mark, warm and golden, settling underneath the florals like a second skin. Patchouli holds the structure throughout, never loud, but present enough to keep the sugar from floating off. The drydown is where it lives best: vanilla and brown sugar close together, slightly creamy, slightly resinous, lingering close to the skin for another 3-4 hours. On fabric the next morning, you get a ghost of violet and vanilla, faint and comforting.
Cultural impact
Violet and iris have long shared space in perfumery, a pairing that evokes vintage powder rooms and old-school elegance. Avant-Garde Air takes that classic combination and softens it with brown sugar, trading some of the tradition's austerity for something warmer and more approachable. The result feels like a conversation between past and present, floral heritage filtered through a contemporary, gourmand-tinted lens. Violet brings that slightly candied, almost confectionery sweetness at the top, a bright lift that draws you in before the iris settles into its powdery, suede-like heart.
