The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Paper Blossom arrived in 2024 as part of And Other Stories' expanding fragrance wardrobe. The name evokes something that barely needs to bloom to be noticed. A petal on a page. A color left on fabric. The perfumer built the composition around a central tension: the cool, watery clarity of pear and honey pomelo at the opening, folding into a powdery heart where violet and orris root do most of the talking, then settling into a dry, creamy base of sandalwood, vanilla, and amber. The honey pomelo brings a bittersweet edge that sharpens the pear's softness, adding just enough bite to keep the opening from collapsing into simple fruit. In the heart, the violet reads almost translucent, a watery floral that the orris root thickens into something that feels more like suede than cosmetics.
The interesting choice here is agave. Not the sweet, roasted kind, but blue agave. It brings a green, almost mineral dryness to the heart, a vegetal coolness that cuts across the powder like a line of clean air. Paired with orris root, it does something unexpected: it makes the powdery iris feel less like cosmetics and more like clean air after rain on warm stone. The violet bridges fruity and floral, threading its watery sweetness between the agave's dryness and the orris's chalk, while the base keeps everything grounded in skin warmth rather than sweetness.
The evolution
The first five minutes are all fruit. Pear hits first, bright and aqueous, joined by honey pomelo's bittersweet edge and the green tartness of blackcurrant blossom. It reads almost like cold juice, which surprises. The pomelo carries a faint honeyed sweetness that softens its citrus sharpness, giving the opening a rounded quality that pure grapefruit would not. Then the fruit pulls back and the heart arrives, and with it a shift. Violet arrives soft, like a thumb smudge of watercolor on skin. Orris root deepens it into something powdery, slightly mineral. The agave is subtle but doing work in the background, giving the whole phase a dryness that keeps it from going saccharine. This is the phase that defines the fragrance, the moment where Paper Blossom stops smelling like fruit and starts smelling like itself.
Cultural impact
Paper Blossom sits at the lighter end of the And Other Stories scent wardrobe. It wears best in spring and early summer, on days that start with a coffee and a long walk and end somewhere with a book. The powdery iris and watery pear give it a certain literary-romantic register, the kind of fragrance that suits a linen sleeve and an open notebook. On skin, it does something more interesting than fill a room. It creates a sense of composure, the impression that the wearer has already decided what they want to say and doesn't need the scent to speak louder than they do.
