The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vanulia emerged from a single question: what happens when vanilla stops being polite? Amer Alradhi created this fragrance with vanilla and frangipani on one side, Trat Oud on the other. The name itself draws from vanilla's botanical roots, reinterpreted in a different light. Released in 2025, it represents a significant layering exercise, bringing together many materials to create something with real character. The interplay between sweet and dark, between creamy warmth and resinous depth, creates an intriguing balance. This isn't a fragrance that settles for comfort, it's one that asks vanilla to work harder, to reach further, to become something more than expected.
The Trat Oud brings a dark, smoky resinousness that anchors the composition. Combined with the warmth of frangipani, tropical, creamy, radiant, a heart emerges that feels sweet without ever becoming soft. White florals, including gardenia, jasmine, and tuberose, layer underneath, creating a rich, enveloping quality that adds depth and presence. The rum and saffron in the opening bring bright, complex spice, but it's the floral heart that carries the real weight.
The evolution
The opening is an event. Rum, saffron, mandarin, and black pepper arrive together, bright, spicy, almost sharp enough to sting. As the minutes pass, the citrus begins to recede and the florals start their emergence. Frangipani and gardenia take over, softening the spice into something warmer, creamier. The drydown is where Vanulia earns its name. Vanilla and tonka bean settle close to the skin, but underneath them the Trat Oud and coffee linger, a smoky, resinous base that adds depth and presence. The white florals that emerged in the heart continue to unfold, adding a lingering buttery richness that keeps the fragrance from becoming too dark. Overall, this is a fragrance that offers considerable complexity and staying power, with a character that evolves from sharp and bright to warm and enveloping as the hours progress.
Cultural impact
Vanulia stands as a statement piece from Amer Perfumes, a Saudi Arabian house. The fragrance uses a complex pyramid structure with a bold rum-saffron opening that brings immediate intensity and character. Its composition draws from traditional Arabian materials, oud and resinous notes, combined with Western perfumery techniques to create something with cultural identity. The blend of white florals with vanilla and tonka bean, anchored by the darker base of oud and coffee, reflects a deliberate artistic choice rather than a simple formula.
