Why it exists.
The beginning
Pirineum comes from childhood memory. Perfumer Jordi Magrans spent his first decade in the snowy Mediterranean mountains of Andorra, where winter mornings carried the balsamic scent of fir trees and spring brought an unexpected tang of rare flowers alongside summer fruits. That sensory snapshot, the cold canopy giving way to warmth below, became the brief for this 2019 composition. Magrans set out to bottle the seasonal shift he grew up breathing: a Mediterranean altitude where green sharpens to floral and floral loosens into something spiced and grounded. The fragrance reads less as a portrait than as a precise record of a specific place, its elevations and its weather folded into a single wearable composition.
The interesting choice is pairing hemlock with white florals at the top. Gardenia and jasmine enter the structure alongside the green needle, giving Pirineum its unusual lift and brightness from the very first spray. Then nagarmotha does the heavier work, an earthy oil with a rooted, almost mineral character, pulling the florals down toward soil before the styrax and clove warm the whole structure. It's a layered contrast: alpine air at the surface, Mediterranean garden at the root.
The evolution
The opening belongs to hemlock. It comes in green and resinous, with a cool herbal edge that reads like the air around cut fir branches. White florals arrive almost immediately, gardenia doing most of the lifting while jasmine adds a darker, almost humid sweetness. The florals stay prominent through the early wear, and the green never fully leaves. As the composition moves forward, something shifts: the red fruits and papaya surface, giving a soft sweetness that cuts through the green before dissolving into nagarmotha's earthy pull. The transition feels organic rather than staged, each note handing off to the next as the cooler opening gradually yields to something warmer and more grounded. From here, vetiver and styrax take over. Clove adds dry warmth, and the composition settles into a smoky-root accord that feels built to linger.
Cultural impact
Pirineum draws on a lineage that stretches back through decades of green-spicy masculine colognes, wearing its heritage openly while filtering it through a contemporary sensibility. The composition reads older than its 2019 launch, drawing on vintage structures without copying them, and that tension between past and present gives it a particular kind of appeal. Wearers tend to come to Pirineum looking for something with green character and quiet depth, and they find a fragrance that rewards attention rather than demanding it.
