The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Deluxe Edition arrived in 2006 as a collector's iteration on My Queen, released two years after the original. Anne Flipo and Dominique Ropion returned to the composition, tightening its resolve. The original My Queen had established a floral-oriental template: Parma violet, sweet almond, a heart of orange blossom. The Deluxe Edition kept that architecture but made subtle adjustments that gave it more presence for collectors who had already lived in the original. What distinguished this edition wasn't a structural overhaul. It was refinement, a sense of deliberate intention behind each note. The Parma violet opens with a cool, powdery brightness that feels immediately familiar yet distinct.
The combination of Parma violet and sweet almond reads immediately as nostalgic, those Parma Violet sweets, the talcum on a grandmother's bureau. The heliotrope in the heart amplifies the almond axis, adding a cherry-blossom fuzziness that rounds the edges. Orange blossom brings a waxy, indolic warmth that keeps the florals from reading as purely decorative. White musk behaves like a second skin, making the whole composition feel worn rather than applied.
The evolution
The opening arrives quiet and precise: violet's cool, green exhale followed immediately by almond's bittersweet warmth. Right away, it smells like something private. Within minutes, heliotrope swells into the composition, pulling the almond toward its cherry-blossom cousin. Orange blossom adds its waxy, slightly indolic pulse, the smell of flowers that are alive, not painted. White musks layer in, and the fragrance begins to read as skin-warm rather than applied. The drydown takes its time. Cedar arrives first, giving the composition some architectural backbone. Vetiver and patchouli follow, pulling the powdery sweetness toward earth. Iris root is the quiet undertow, barely noticeable in the opening, now unmistakable as the sweetness recedes. Vanilla persists longest, wrapping around the cedar like a scarf left on a chair.
Cultural impact
My Queen Deluxe Edition occupied a specific moment in the luxury fragrance market, 2006. The original My Queen had established a floral-oriental approach; the Deluxe Edition built on that foundation, offering something for collectors who wanted more from the original. The composition retains the Parma violet and sweet almond template while introducing additional depth through its heart notes and base structure. Orange blossom and heliotrope work together to create a warm, powdery character that feels both nostalgic and contemporary. The fragrance invites repeated wearing, revealing new facets with each encounter.
