The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Excellent Men sits inside Al Haramain Perfumes' sprawling catalog, a house that has built a wide-reaching presence in oriental perfumery. Where many of the brand's releases lean into traditional Arabian territory, this one stretches the other direction: tropical fruit, hibiscus, and marigold up top, opening a door into a warmer, more floral-masculine register before the heart pivots to saffron, cypriol, and patchouli. The release year remains undocumented, but the construction reads as a generous, confident composition: lush with materials, unafraid of volume, and clearly built for presence. The top notes announce themselves loudly, with passion fruit and blackcurrant carrying an almost jam-like sweetness, brightened further by hibiscus and softened by marigold's herbal floral edge.
What sets Excellent Men apart is the collision at its core. Passion fruit and blackcurrant open with a fruit-cordial sweetness that has no business being this close to oud and cypriol, yet the tension works. The rose bridges both worlds, floral enough to soften the fruit, dense enough to survive the wood. Aquatic notes in the heart add an unexpected mineral coolness, a flicker of sea air through the spice market. It's a formula that trusts the wearer not to flinch when the fruit and the wood share a sentence.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are a rush. Passion fruit and blackcurrant come in bright, almost jam-like, with hibiscus and marigold threading behind them. Rose warms the whole thing up, turning the sweetness from candy into something more grown. Within thirty minutes the fruit pulls back and the spices step forward. Saffron, ginger, white pepper, and cardamom build a slow heat, and cypriol and patchouli settle in underneath, giving the composition a smoky, root-like gravity. The oud here is restrained, more texture than statement, and the aquatic note flickers once and disappears. By the two-hour mark, the fragrance has crossed over entirely. Cedarwood, sandalwood, guaiac wood, and ebony form a dark, polished wood floor, and musk and amber hold it all together.
Cultural impact
Excellent Men draws from a well-established tradition of Arabian masculine fragrances that blend fruit-floral openings with dense wood bases, a stylistic combination that has become a recognizable register within the broader oriental perfume landscape. Wearers tend to be drawn to its versatility: the fruit top reads well in warmer seasons, while the wood and spice drydown carries through cooler weather. The composition's structural arc, from bright tropical opening to deep polished wood base, makes it adaptable across occasions, casual daytime wear as easily as evening settings where a heavier scent typically dominates.
