The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Le Vestiaire des Parfums translates the house's iconic garments into liquid form. Sleek Suede draws from YSL's deep connection to Morocco, cradle of leather craft, source of suede's sensuous texture. The sleek silhouettes YSL made famous weren't just garments; they were armor dressed as softness. This fragrance does the same thing. Mathilde Bijaoui crafted Sleek Suede in 2017 as part of the Le Vestiaire des Parfums Oriental Collection, built around cacao pod, incense, black pepper, and clove.
What makes Sleek Suede distinctive is the cacao-suede alliance. The cacao pod carries both bitter dark chocolate and a fatty, buttery quality that mimics suede itself, the material it's named for. Instead of pairing cocoa with fruit or cream, Bijaoui leans into confectionery depth and tactile leather softness. The incense and tobacco amplify the resinous character, making this read as dark, smoky, and unapologetically rich.
The evolution
The opening hits hard. Cacao pod arrives bitter and immediate, smoke threading through with black pepper prickle. Incense hangs resinous and dry in the air. For the first 30 minutes, this is all declaration. Then the warmth arrives. Nutmeg and clove layer sweetness under the cacao, which deepens toward dark chocolate rather than confectionery. Cedar emerges quietly, keeping everything grounded. By the heart, the incense has softened into something more contemplative while oud takes center stage, not aggressive, but rich and woody, threaded through with that suede softness. The drydown is where this becomes something to live in. Tobacco leaf wraps around vanilla and labdanum, patchouli providing just enough edge to keep the sweetness honest. This lingers for hours. The sillage stays strong, marking territory on skin and fabric alike. By morning, it's still there, a ghost of smoke and sweetness on yesterday's jacket.
Cultural impact
Sleek Suede occupies a specific corner of the YSL fragrance universe, warm, resinous, and unapologetically rich. The cocoa-tobacco backbone creates an intimate warmth that lingers. Community feedback consistently praises its depth and lasting power. Cacao pod brings bitter dark chocolate while tobacco adds warm, aromatic depth. Incense and resinous notes deepen the composition, creating a dark, smoky character that unfolds gracefully on the skin. Note interactions reveal roasted depth as the fragrance settles, with the suede-like texture creating an intimate, tactile sensation that feels both luxurious and grounded.
