The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Opium Elixir Voluptueux arrived in 2008 as an intentional deepening of the Opium legacy, the house's most provocative fragrance line that began in 1977. This edition carried forward the original's bold spirit while pushing into more intimate territory. The application method told you everything: dabbed from the glass stopper or applied directly with a finger, the fragrance was meant to linger on pulse points like a secret. Neck, cleavage, the inside of the wrist. This was not a fragrance for rooms. It was one for skin, designed to reveal itself slowly to those who drew close.
The heart of this composition lives in the carnation and myrrh pairing, a pairing that adds a spicy warmth to the expected white florals. Carnation in perfumery acts as a bridge note: it has the spice of clove without the sharpness, the sweetness of honey without the cloying quality. Myrrh amplifies this effect, adding its own balsamic depth while creating a slightly medicinal counterpoint to the vanilla and amber that follow. Opoponax, sometimes called sweet myrrh, adds another layer of resinous warmth that distinguishes this from a straightforward oriental.
The evolution
The opening hits bright, mandarin and bergamot arriving clean and sharp, the lily of the valley adding a green lift that prevents immediate sweetness. This phase lasts perhaps twenty minutes before the heart takes over. Myrrh announces itself first, resinous and warm, followed quickly by jasmine's floral indolic depth and carnation's unexpected spice. There's a moment where the composition feels almost medicinal, a slight sharpness that divides people. Those who love it describe it as the fragrance getting interesting. The drydown is where this earns its name. Vanilla and patchouli form a warm, creamy base that stays close to the skin for hours. Opoponax adds a final layer of balsamic sweetness that makes everything feel finished, intentional. The next morning, there's a faint trace on the inside of the wrist, warm, amber, still present.
Cultural impact
Opium Elixir Voluptueux holds a specific position in the YSL fragrance wardrobe, more intensive and passionate than previous flankers, applying close to the skin rather than filling a room. Launched in 2008, it represents the house's continued investment in the Opium franchise's most dedicated following. The warm, resinous character offers the house signature in a deeper, more intimate register. The fragrance rewards proximity rather than announcing itself across a space, a choice that suits its private, opulent character.
