The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Xerjoff, founded in Turin in 2007 by Sergio Momo, has built its reputation on merging Italian luxury with high-concept design. The 17/17 Stone Label collection treats each fragrance as a singular work of art, bottled to be displayed rather than tucked away. Pikovaya Dama takes its name from the Queen of Spades, a figure of power and enigma drawn from Russian literary legend. For this 2018 release, Xerjoff enlisted Chris Maurice to compose a fragrance worthy of the collection's ambitions. The brief was clear: create something that commands attention without begging for it, something that reveals complexity over time rather than all at once.
Chris Maurice structured Pikovaya Dama 2018 as a study in contrasts. The opening notes (freesia, bergamot, red fruits, lemon) create immediate appeal through brightness and accessibility. The heart (rose, lily of the valley, iris) bridges that initial impact with classical florality. The drydown (musk, rosewood, vanilla, amber, patchouli, sandalwood, vetiver) is where the fragrance proves its longevity and complexity. Each layer serves a purpose: the opening attracts, the heart convinces, the drydown endures. This deliberate structure mirrors the collection's philosophy that each fragrance should be irreplaceable, a singular object worthy of display.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with a sparkling citrus-fruity overture. Freesia provides the first impression, cool and slightly sweet, immediately joined by bergamot and lemon for brightness. Red fruits enter shortly after, lending a juicy tartness that feels like biting into a ripe cherry or raspberry. This opening is deliberate, theatrical even, designed to announce presence. As the top notes fade over the first fifteen minutes, the heart emerges. Rose takes its place as the dominant floral, rich and velvety, while iris adds powdery depth and a subtle violet-root bitterness. Lily of the valley bridges the transition, keeping the florals grounded and fresh. By the third hour, the drydown takes over. Musk and vanilla create a warm, intimate base. Amber adds resinous sweetness, and sandalwood brings creamy woodiness. Rosewood reinforces the woody character while patchouli introduces earthy, slightly smoky undertones. Vetiver completes the composition with a dry, grassy finish that lingers on skin for eight to twelve hours.
Cultural impact
Pikovaya Dama sits in the lineage of great aldehydic fragrances while carving its own territory. The aldehydic-powdery-iris triad puts it in conversation with vintage classics, but the Omani frankincense and modern cedarwood keep it from feeling retro. It's the fragrance for someone who knows the genre and wants something that honors it without replicating it.
