The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
First Edition Or arrived in 2014 as part of Van Cleef & Arpels' First Edition collection, a limited expression of the house's floral expertise. Perfumer Nathalie Gracia-Cetto built the composition around a single concept: an elegant bouquet of white flowers that captures their most luminous qualities. The opening sparkle of bergamot, peach, and raspberry is the first signal. Bright. Fruity. A glittering top note that catches light and draws attention immediately. But the real intention hides beneath that shine. The white floral heart waits patiently, emerging gradually as the fruity brightness begins to soften and recede, revealing something more subtle and refined underneath.
The heart of jasmine and lily of the valley gives First Edition Or its character. These are not bold materials. Jasmine Sambac can tip into indolic darkness on some skin, but here it reads creamy, almost transparent. Lily of the valley adds a green, slightly soapy cleanliness that prevents the white flowers from feeling heavy. The rose at its center is a supporting actor, not a lead. Powdery, gentle, it gives the floral heart texture without weight. The base of vanilla and white musk is where the fragrance settles into its most intimate register. This is not a loud drydown.
The evolution
The opening is the shortest chapter. Bergamot leads, sharp and sparkling, before the peach and raspberry carry it into softer territory. By the time you reach the first hour, the white florals have taken over. Jasmine, lily of the valley, and rose layered together create something that smells expensive without smelling complicated. Not everyone notices this phase. But you will, if you pay attention. The drydown takes its time. As the hours pass, the vanilla emerges, warm and slightly sweet, wrapping around the white musk. The florals do not disappear. They settle, deepen, become part of the skin rather than something sitting on top of it. The final trace lingers, soft and delicate, white florals faded into something you simply are.
Cultural impact
First Edition Or offers a sophisticated counterpoint to heavier floral compositions. Rather than projecting gold through heavy Orientalism or obvious amber, the fragrance embeds its metallic reference in the cool sparkle of bergamot and the textured sweetness of raspberry. The restraint in its composition speaks to a particular vision of luxury, one that favors subtlety and nuance over overt opulence. Its impact lies in demonstrating that richness can whisper rather than shout, that a fragrance can feel expensive without being aggressive about it.
