The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Rivea was born on a walk through Portofino, where Paolo and Tiziana Terenzi followed the crescent bay's curve and remembered something older than scent: the San Giorgio bonfire, the dancing flames of their childhood, the sea as a constant in every moment that mattered. The 1960s Riviera inspired it, that stretch of coast where Italian elegance met barefoot freedom, where Les Italiens arrived with the cry of bare feet, jeans, and wind-tangled hair. Paolo composed this 2023 extrait to capture that golden stretch of coast: glamorous but sun-warmed, polished but untamed. Portofino's green hills cradling the bay, the elegance of dolce vita, the salt-tang memory of being young near the water.
Rivea began as a private olfactory sketch Paolo Terenzi made after a crossing to Portofino, where the Ligurian Riviera, its dry stone walls, and the wild landscape inspired the first accord of saffron, davana, and Italian lemon that would later anchor the composition. The moment captured something fundamental: a breeze carrying salt off the water, the resinous snap of sun-warmed stone, and a thread of rose weaving through it all.
The evolution
The formula grew from a single saffron-rose sketch into a layered extrait, with marine seaweed, ambergris, and Ceylonese cypriol added to the heart and a base of Australian sandalwood, Bourbon vanilla, and Italian cypress settling the drydown into the warm, salted-amber signature the house released in 2023. Each iteration deepened the conversation between the opening trio and the new arrivals, letting the saffron and rose sink into the resinous gravity of cypriol while the marine notes threaded salt through every layer. The Bulgarian rose at the top stretched downward, meeting the seaweed and ambergris in a hush of mineral warmth that felt less like a coastline and more like a memory of one. The sandalwood and vanilla gave the base a creamy, almost edible undertone, while the Italian cypress added a dry, aromatic edge that kept the whole composition from collapsing into pure sweetness.
Cultural impact
Rivea wears like a memory of the Italian Riviera, not a postcard. The seaweed-ambergris heart gives it a distinctly marine soul, the kind of salt-kissed depth that most amber-heavy compositions simply don't attempt. There's something almost cinematic about the way the rose opens soft and bright before the cypriol pulls it down into something older and more shadowed. On skin the saffron lingers like a fingerprint, warm and faintly metallic, while the sandalwood and vanilla hold everything together in a slow, creamy glow.
