The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Strellson entered the fragrance world in 2010 with a clear intention. The brand had built its reputation on menswear and confidence. Strellson No 1 was developed as a signature scent, an olfactory extension of the company's aesthetic. The composition relies on a carefully selected palette of notes that balance citrus brightness with warm, woody depth. Neroli and bergamot open the blend with crisp, luminous clarity. Cardamom adds warm spice that rounds the edges of the citrus. Cedar and vetiver provide a dry, green undertone that grounds the brighter top notes. The heart reveals jasmine and iris, adding floral nuance without becoming soft or feminine. Frankincense and patchouli anchor the base with smoky, earthy warmth.
Givaudan developed the fragrance and introduced a new aromatic material called ScentTrek Wacapou, a woody note with white musk nuances designed to behave differently from traditional base materials. This material emerged as part of the drydown, adding warmth and complexity to the base notes. The Wacapou note brings a distinctive character to the blend, contributing depth and a subtle sweetness that rounds out the earthier elements of patchouli and vetiver. Tonka bean further enhances this effect, creating a soft, slightly powdery undertone that lingers close to the skin.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with intent. Neroli and bergamot arrive sharp, almost confrontational in their clarity. Cardamom adds a warm spice that keeps the citrus from feeling too clean. Cedar leaf grounds everything with a green, slightly bitter edge that reads as modern rather than classic. The heart phase introduces jasmine and lavender, an unexpected pairing that somehow feels familiar. The coriander adds a spicy lift while iris brings a dry, powdery quality that prevents the florals from becoming soft. The jasmine doesn't bloom so much as settle, maintaining its composure throughout the development. The base is where Strellson No 1 earns its stripes. Frankincense arrives with a faint smoke, weaving between patchouli's earthiness and vetiver's dry wood. Wacapou ScentTrek and tonka bean emerge last, creating a warm, slightly sweet finish that evolves on the skin over hours.
Cultural impact
Strellson No 1 arrived with a distinctive approach. The fragrance features a carefully balanced composition that avoids the pitfalls of excessive projection or overwhelming sillage. Givaudan's ScentTrek Wacapou material adds a distinctive quality to the blend, bringing woody depth with white musk nuances that set it apart from conventional masculine fragrances. The overall effect is refined and structured, appealing to those who appreciate nuance over bravado. The scent has attracted wearers who value a more subtle presence, finding in Strellson No 1 an alternative that doesn't sacrifice complexity for impact.
