Why it exists.
The beginning
Balade Imaginaire translates to 'Imaginary Ballad', and that's exactly the register. This is a scent for places that don't quite exist: a bar at the edge of the forest, a room full of strangers who somehow understand you. Robertet composed it in 2021 for Slava Zaitsev, the Russian fashion house known for theatrical evening wear and dresses built for drama. Where other houses might reach for universal appeal, Balade Imaginaire reaches for atmosphere instead.
What makes the structure unusual is the vermouth. Used sparingly, it adds a bitter, aromatic quality that lifts the rum without sweetening it, a bartender's move, not a pastry chef's. Below that, cypress and sage form a Mediterranean heart that feels ancient and specific, not generic green. The smoke doesn't arrive until the base, creeping in quietly before claiming everything. It's an unconventional sequencing for a leather fragrance, and it earns attention for that alone.
The evolution
The opening arrives sharp and resinous, frankincense clarity cut with pink pepper's brightness. The rum sits warm underneath, slightly sweet, while the vermouth adds a bitter herbal edge that reads almost medicinal. It lingers here longer than expected, maybe forty minutes, before the cypress overtakes. Sage joins, bringing something damp and savory. Smoke begins to curl through the composition, not as an opening act, but as a quiet announcement. In the drydown, leather and tobacco take over entirely. The labdanum adds a sticky, almost animalic sweetness that rounds the smoke without softening it. Lasts into the next morning, close to the skin, difficult to wash off completely.
