The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Goodman's is a collaboration between two luxury institutions: ROJA London and Bergdorf Goodman, Manhattan's most prestigious department store. When Bergdorf Goodman approached Roja Dove to create a signature scent worthy of their name, the brief was deceptively simple: capture the essence of the quintessential Manhattan gentleman. But that man, sophisticated, confident, equally at home in Mayfair and on Fifth Avenue, demanded a fragrance with real complexity and presence. Not another safe masculine scent. Something that spoke with authority. Roja Dove built Goodman's around a foundation of patchouli, grounding it in animalic depth with castoreum and civet, materials that add sensuality and weight rarely found in modern perfumery. Warm spices like cardamom and cinnamon provide structure, while the floral heart of Grasse jasmine, neroli, and May rose softens what could have been harsh.
What makes Goodman's distinctive is its willingness to be animalic in an era of safe, skin-close fragrances. Castoreum and civet, materials derived from animal sources that perfumers have used for centuries, add a tactile quality that no synthetic can replicate. They create depth and sensuality that sits close to the skin, revealed gradually rather than announced. The warm spice architecture is equally deliberate. Cardamom and cinnamon don't spike and fade; they build a structure that holds the florals in place while adding warmth throughout the wear. The patchouli foundation keeps everything grounded, preventing the spice from becoming sharp and the animalic notes from overwhelming.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and immediate. Bergamot and mandarin orange arrive sparkling, a flash of citrus that announces itself without apology. Within minutes, the florals begin their reveal, Grasse jasmine first, then neroli, the two working together to soften what could have been a harsh opening. May rose arrives quietly, adding elegance without sweetness. By the second hour, the warm spices take their position. Cardamom and cinnamon pulse underneath the florals, building structure as the citrus fades. The ylang-ylang adds a creamy, tropical dimension that keeps the heart from reading as too masculine. The drydown is where Goodman's reveals its true character. Hours in, the patchouli emerges fully, taking its position alongside cedar and vetiver. The animalic notes, castoreum, civet, musk, become more pronounced, adding intimacy and sensuality that stays close to the skin. Frankincense appears as a final dusty, resinous thread, connecting everything that came before. On skin, it becomes a signature. On fabric, it lingers close.
Cultural impact
The Bergdorf Goodman collaboration represents the intersection of two luxury institutions, British haute perfumery and American retail heritage. Goodman's has found its audience among men who treat fragrance as a personal signature, willing to invest in complexity and presence over safety. Within niche fragrance circles, it occupies a specific position: a statement piece for those who want to be remembered, not blended in.
