The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Prestige arrived in 2018 from Regalien. The brief was straightforward on paper: build a composition that holds the line between classical perfumery and something a modern collector would actually reach for. MG Gulcicek, working with dsm-firmenich, built the structure around a chypre framework. Bergamot and galbanum up top, a gardenia-jasmine-rose heart, then amber, labdanum, and oakmoss for the foundation. The house's own description calls it "grand and monumental," a mossy bittersweet beauty where classic and modern intersect. The galbanum arrives with an almost bitter green snap that cuts through any sweetness before it's even had a chance to build, and the gardenia in the heart carries a creamy, waxy fullness that softens the green edge without smoothing it over entirely.
The chypre spine is what makes this composition worth a second look. Galbanum gives that sharp, resinous green bite that most modern fragrances have abandoned in favor of safer citrus or aquatic openings, and pairing it with carnation in the top register produces a spicy-green tension. The heart stacks gardenia, jasmine, rose, and ylang-ylang into a fuller floral bouquet than classical chypres typically carry, but the base pulls the composition back into structure.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are sharp and green. Galbanum and bergamot hit first, with carnation adding a clove-adjacent warmth underneath. The citrus brightens quickly, and for a brief window the fragrance reads almost like a classic cologne, bright and uncomplicated. Then the white florals arrive. Jasmine leads, with gardenia adding a creamy weight and ylang-ylang bringing its banana-skin sweetness. Rose threads through everything, but never dominates. The heart holds for about two hours, and during that stretch the composition smells like a very specific kind of elegance, the kind found in old hotels with good florists. The shift into drydown is gradual. Vanilla softens the edges of the florals while oakmoss and patchouli introduce a damp, earthy depth. Labdanum and tolu balsam add a resinous warmth that keeps the whole thing from going too dark.
Cultural impact
Prestige by Regalien, released in 2018 by perfumer MG Gulcicek in collaboration with dsm-firmenich, leaned into the classical galbanum-oakmoss axis while layering in a dense white-floral heart that read modern without abandoning heritage. The chypre structure is what defines the composition, and the way Prestige handles it reveals a lot about its intentions. The galbanum up top lands with that sharp, almost bitter resinous green that recalls an older generation of chypres, but the heart keeps the composition grounded in something that smells current.
