The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dem was conceived as part of Regalian's Ottoman Bath Rituals collection, drawing from centuries of hammam tradition where steam, citrus, and herbal teas have been central to the cleansing ritual. Founded in Turkey in 2016, Regalian has consistently blended Ottoman heritage with modern perfumery, using bold colour-coded bottles to signal their niche intent. Dem captures the precise moment when warm bath water gives way to a fresh, green tea infusion, translating the sensory experience of the hammam into a wearable fragrance. The perfumer worked with bergamot, white tea, and black tea to mirror the steam-to-infusion transition at the heart of the collection's concept.
The note philosophy behind Dem prioritizes clarity and transition over complexity. Rather than layering multiple competing elements, the fragrance moves through distinct phases, each anchored by a specific ingredient family. Bergamot and white tea establish the clean, aqueous quality that defines the opening. Black tea and mate provide the earthy backbone of the heart. Amber, musk, and patchouli round out the drydown with warmth and restraint. This structure mirrors the hammam ritual itself, where water, steam, and herbal infusion follow one another in a deliberate sequence.
The evolution
The scent journey begins with bergamot and neroli, bright and clean, softened by the delicate quality of white tea. This opening mirrors the initial steam and citrus sprays of a hammam session. As you move into the heart, black tea and mate dominate, their earthy, slightly bitter character replacing the initial brightness. Ginger adds a warm, herbal pulse that feels natural in this mid-phase, while green tea keeps the blend from becoming heavy. The drydown is where the fragrance finds its resting point: amber provides warmth, musk creates intimacy, and patchouli grounds everything with a subtle earthiness that feels like the aftermath of the ritual, when skin is warm and cleansed and still carrying the faint memory of herbal steam.
Cultural impact
Dem by Regalien, though a contemporary creation, taps into a lineage of Mediterranean fragrance traditions that celebrate bright citrus and aromatic herbs. The bergamot and neroli echo the historic use of citrus groves in Southern Europe, while pink pepper adds a modern twist reminiscent of spice routes that once connected East and West. White tea, a newer note, reflects the growing global appreciation for subtle, calming accords in luxury perfumery. This blend thus bridges past and present, honoring classic olfactory palettes while embracing current trends toward lighter, more nuanced compositions, making it a cultural bridge between heritage and modernity.
