The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cara Sylvain designed Vanity Oud in 2018 as a study in contradiction. The name points to oud. The composition points somewhere else, toward the lush, tropical abundance of Istanbul's botanical heritage. Regalien, founded in 2016 by brothers Bilen Besen and Varol Besen, built its identity on bold colour-coded bottles and scents that move between historic trade routes and modern collector confidence. Vanity Oud was their argument that even within a single fragrance, a wearer might experience different selves.
The base notes reveal the real story: Vanilla and Ambergris anchor the sweetness, but Cedarwood and Agarwood (Oud) provide a mineral warmth rather than cloying heaviness. Six to eight hours on skin means this fragrance lingers past sunset. The oud doesn't arrive as a statement, it settles into the wear like a secret kept between close friends. This is the kind of composition that rewards patience, where the drydown becomes more interesting than the opening.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to Lychee and Plum, fat, juicy, impossible to ignore. Raspberry flits in and out, more suggestion than substance. Then the florals arrive. Frangipani, Orchid, Lotus, Jasmine, not queued, but layered, like standing in a greenhouse at dusk. The oud doesn't announce itself. It hums underneath, warm and resinous. Hours later, the florals fade and Cedar takes over. Not sharp Cedar, soft, worn, like an old chair. The Vanilla surfaces last, sweet but not childish. This is the version that stays on fabric, on skin, on the memory of whoever was standing close enough to notice.
Cultural impact
Vanity Oud has found its audience among those who want something with more complexity than a straightforward floral. The 2018 launch sits alongside the house's other bold experiments, Aqua Notte, Antidote, Marrakesh, and holds its own as the feminine counterpart. It's the kind of fragrance that gets compared to Tom Ford's Black Orchid for its dark-floral energy, but with a warmer, more approachable character. Among niche collectors, it earns praise for longevity and for the way the amber accord keeps things interesting long after the opening.
