The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Regularly Irregular emerged in 2019 from MG Gulcicek working with dsm-firmenich. The structure reflects this: five bright, assertive top notes flood the opening before the composition pivots to something earthier, something that grounds what came before. The opening burst of citrus and fruit sets an immediate tone, confident, unapologetic, and thoroughly modern. As the initial wave settles, the heart materials arrive to reshape the composition, introducing depth and complexity that transforms the initial brightness into something more layered. Oakmoss threads through the middle stages, providing an anchoring mossiness that prevents the fragrance from remaining purely airy or ephemeral.
The pyramid is built on paradox. Five fruity top notes, pineapple, apple, raspberry, lemon, bergamot, arrive simultaneously in a wave of sweetness. The heart offers birch, rose, lily of the valley, and Sichuan pepper: an earthy, smoky counterweight. Sweet tropical fruit meets smoky, slightly tar-like depth, and the contrast shapes the fragrance's character. Oakmoss anchors the base, providing the mossy earthiness that prevents the whole thing from drifting into pure confection.
The evolution
The opening is generous. Five notes, pineapple, apple, raspberry, lemon, bergamot, arrive at once in a rush of sweetness that announces itself without apology. This is the party entrance. Bright, confident, and not particularly interested in waiting for you to catch up. The fruits dominate the opening phase. There's no gradual reveal here; they're simply all present, a tropical accord that reads as both playful and assertive. Then the pivot. The sweetness begins to recede as the heart materials arrive, birch lending a smoky, slightly tar-like depth, rose and lily of the valley softening the edges, Sichuan pepper introducing a quiet, warming spice. The oakmoss shows up early, threading through before the top notes have fully departed. The drydown belongs to patchouli, amber, white musk, and ambroxan, a warm, intimate finish that sits close to the skin and refuses to disappear.
Cultural impact
Regularly Irregular is a 2019 Turkish release that openly wears its inspiration on its sleeve. Community reception centers on its pineapple-forward opening and the inevitable comparison to Creed's Aventus, Regalien's interpretation leans sweeter and less smoky, which readers either find refreshing or excessive. What makes it notable beyond the comparison is its structural boldness: five top notes arriving simultaneously is a confident choice, and the pivot into birch and oakmoss in the heart shows a house not interested in playing it safe.
