The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dunhuang is the first oasis reached by foreign merchants on the Silk Road, a trading town at the edge of the Gobi where East met West and cultures exchanged freely. Prissana named this 2022 composition after that place, translating the ancient trade route's aromatic complexity into a single wearable composition. The idea: a fragrance that captures what it smelled like to arrive somewhere unfamiliar, surrounded by unfamiliar goods, incense, and spice. Prin Lomros built it from citrus, tea, osmanthus, and warm woods, a structure that moves from brightness to depth, from the first breath to the final smoke.
The osmanthus is the key differentiator. Unlike many tea fragrances that rely on green or black tea as a structural element, Dunhuang centers osmanthus absolute, an ingredient prized for its apricot-floral sweetness and honeyed character. Combined with jasmine tea, it creates a sweet-floral heart that sits against the smoky, slightly bitter Lapsang Souchong. The result is a fragrance that smells simultaneously ancient and modern, with an animalic depth from civet and costus that adds an edge most tea compositions lack. It's complex without being difficult, a balance few perfumers achieve.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with citrus brightness, kumquat and mandarin orange creating a tart, luminous first impression. Within minutes the Lapsang Souchong arrives, smoky and warm, threading through the citrus like smoke through a warm room. The jasmine tea opens as the citrus fades, and this is where Dunhuang earns its reputation: reviewers describe the tea as one of the finest in niche perfumery, creamy and floral with a slight bitterness that keeps it from becoming sweet. Osmanthus and plum weave through the heart alongside magnolia, creating a sweet-floral-fruity middle that feels rich without being heavy. The drydown is where it gets interesting. Amber and civet create a warm, animalic base, while sandalwood and cedar hold the osmanthus and plum well into the final hours. Costus adds a slight bitterness that prevents the sweetness from overwhelming. Even the next morning, osmanthus and plum linger on fabric. Eight hours is a reasonable expectation on most skin.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 debut, Dunhuang has found a dedicated following in the niche perfume community. The jasmine tea opening is frequently cited as one of the best in contemporary perfumery, and the longevity earns consistent praise. It's become a frequent recommendation in tea fragrance discussions, particularly for those seeking something with more depth than a typical green or black tea composition. The osmanthus and animalic elements make it polarizing in the best way, the kind of fragrance that sparks conversation among those who wear it.
