The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ma Nishtana takes its name from the opening words of the Four Questions asked during the Passover Seder, the moment when ritual pauses to ask why this night is different from all others. The brand drew inspiration from Chava Alberstein's version of Had Gadya, building the fragrance around that same quality of layered storytelling, where a simple question opens into something ancient and specific. Prin Lomros constructed the composition around sacred woods, smoke, and spice, materials that have served ritual for millennia. The frankincense and myrrh anchor the work, creating a foundation that feels both timeless and immediate. What emerges is a fragrance that honors its references while standing on its own, a careful balance of the ceremonial and the wearable.
The unusual element here is the aldehydes. Their presence creates an unexpected brightness that precedes the smoke, offering a crystalline quality to the opening that most incense fragrances bypass entirely. The aldehydes provide contrast against the deeper, darker notes that follow. The church-incense heart develops naturally, building with the patience of something that doesn't need to announce itself. The castoreum in the base adds depth, contributing a warm, animalic dimension that brings the composition close to the skin rather than projecting it outward.
The evolution
The opening presents aldehydic brightness alongside resinous and sharp notes. Frankincense smoke and myrrh arrive as part of the composition, with the aldehydes contributing a lifted quality to the top phase. As the fragrance develops, warm spices deepen the character: clove, cardamom, pink pepper creating complexity that reads as both festive and intimate. The wood notes, including sandalwood, begin to anchor the composition as the smoke settles. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name: warm, resinous, close to skin, the kind of smell that lingers on fabric well into the next day. The longevity is above-average, with projection that remains present without being overwhelming.
Cultural impact
In the incense fragrance landscape, Ma Nishtana occupies a distinctive position. The aldehydic brightness it carries sets it apart from purely smoky compositions, while its warmth and resinous depth give it presence without aggression. The saffron-spice complexity contributes to its layered character, making it a notable entry in the genre. Collectors who appreciate the intersection of sacred materials and wearable perfumery find this fragrance speaks to both traditions without compromising either.
