The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Carnaval was conceived in 2010 as Phebo's tribute to Brazil's most vibrant street festival. Drawing on the house's Amazonian roots, the perfumers imagined the burst of colour and rhythm that fills Belem's avenues during the annual carnival. The name captures that kinetic energy, while the composition brings tog ether tropical florals and warm woods to evoke the sensory overload of the celebration. Phebo's perfumers worked with Brazilian raw materials, including wacapou from the Amazon, to create a fragrance that feels both festive and grounded in its cultural origins.
The note selection reflects Phebo's philosophy of celebrating Brazilian botanicals. Bergamot, while not native to Brazil, provides the sparkling citrus that feels universally festive, while black pepper nods to the spices found in northern Brazil. Gardenia and jasmine were chosen for their tropical lushness that captures the Amazonian floral abundance. Wacapou represents the house's commitment to Brazilian woods, providing a base note that is both exotic and grounding. The overall effect is a fragrance that balances international perfumery craft with a distinctly Brazilian botanical heritage, creating a scent that feels both accessible and authentically rooted in its origins.
The evolution
The fragrance journey begins with bergamot and black pepper creating an immediate spark of energy, mimicking the first drums heard at a carnival parade. Freesia and green notes introduce freshness that feels like the morning light hitting decorated floats. As the fragrance develops, gardenia takes command of the heart, its creamy tropical signature echoing the lush gardens that line Belem's streets during festival time. Jasmine deepens the floral heart with its opulent character while lily of the valley keeps things gracefully balanced. Rose adds a romantic touch that prevents the florals from becoming too bold. The drydown settles into wacapou and sandalwood, providing the warmth and comfort of returning home after a night of celebration, while amber and musk ensure the scent lingers on skin like a memory of the festivities.
Cultural impact
Carnaval emerged at a time when Phebo was exploring the intersection of tropical vibrancy and urban energy, capturing the spirit of Brazilian festivals in a bottle. Its blend of bergamot, black pepper, and fresh green leaves evokes the bustling streets of Rio during Carnaval, while the floral heart of freesia and gardenia adds a touch of elegance reminiscent of parade floats. The scent quickly became a cultural touchstone for those seeking a fragrance that balances excitement with approachability, influencing subsequent releases in the brand’s portfolio. Over the years, it has been featured in street style photography and music videos, reinforcing its association with celebration and youthful exuberance.
