Why it exists.
The beginning
Samba Ruby arrived in 2016, composed by Gil Clavien as a sensuous, sultry take on its namesake stone. It was designed to radiate lush freshness, dramatic florals, and a luminous warmth that outlasts the first hour. Clavien built it around contrast: juicy fruit cut with black licorice's bitter edge, floral softness sharpened by star anise, and a base that moves toward something resinous and quietly addictive. The result is a composition that doesn't ask for attention so much as it earns it, the kind of scent that reads as confident even before you know what's in it.
What makes this composition worth slowing down for is the tension between its fruit and its spice. Strawberry and nectarine on top pull toward sweetness and summer, but the black licorice refuses to let them stay innocent. That bittersweet opening sets up the heart's star anise to land with actual bite. The base balances Indonesian patchouli's earthy depth with benzoin's vanilla-leaning warmth and tonka bean, while sandalwood and orchid round out a drydown that feels more like cashmere than wood.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are all about the collision. Strawberry and nectarine arrive sweet and almost candied, then black licorice slices through and refuses to leave. There's a candy-shop quality to the opening, but it's candy with something underneath. As the fruit softens, star anise climbs forward alongside the rose, and the whole thing tilts warmer and more grown. The dahlia sits where you'd expect violet or peony, adding a dusty, slightly powdery floral that grounds the sweetness. By the second hour, the top notes have mostly evaporated, and what remains is the drydown's slow conversation: benzoin and tonka bean building a resinous warmth, Indonesian patchouli threading underneath with its damp, earthy weight, sandalwood smoothing the edges, and orchid lending a faint tropical creaminess that never quite announces itself.
