The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jerry Lin conceived Knight Sandal with a layered vision in mind. The 2025 release anchors itself in a dense, woody-sandalwood base that radiates warmth from the first application. Around this foundation, resinous and smoky accents unfurl, creating an opening that feels bold and assertive. The composition unfolds in three distinct movements, each one revealing a different facet of Mysore sandalwood while weaving in aromatic herbs that add an herbal greenness to the blend. Animalic depth threads through the entire structure, lending a primal undertone that balances the wood's natural sweetness. The overall effect is a fragrance that evolves continuously, like a story being told by firelight, with each hour bringing new nuances to the surface.
What makes Knight Sandal unusual is the choice to lead with elemi, frankincense, and tar rather than leading with sandalwood itself. The sandalwood is the destination, not the departure. That resinous-smoky opening creates a tension that the creamy woodiness then resolves, giving the wearer the experience of earning something rather than being handed it. Civet appears in the base alongside suede and oakmoss, adding animalic warmth that keeps the composition grounded in something feral beneath its polished surface.
The evolution
The opening announces itself like smoke retreating from hot stone. Elemi and frankincense arrive sharp, almost confrontational, before the tar introduces a darker, mineral note that doesn't apologize. As the initial assault softens, the heart begins to make itself known. Bay leaf and petitgrain arrive quietly, their citrusy-herbal presence easing the composition without erasing its edges. The saffron surfaces next, metallic and cool, like light catching a blade. By the second hour, the sandalwood emerges fully. It's warm, creamy, and present without being loud. The suede and vetiver build around it, creating a textured backdrop that supports the wood's natural richness. The civet adds something close and animalic that clings to skin long after application. This is the payoff. Not loud. Not trying to prove anything.
Cultural impact
Knight Sandal occupies a distinctive space in the niche fragrance landscape, offering a woody-creamy profile with deliberate animalic depth. Its opening is challenging, presenting dark, smoky intensity that asks something of the wearer. The reward comes in the drydown, where refined sandalwood takes center stage, supported by suede and vetiver that add complexity without overwhelming. Those drawn to contrasts in fragrance, raw versus polished, dark versus warm, will find much to explore here. The fragrance rewards patience and close attention, revealing new facets with each wearing.
