    Master Perfumer

    Jerry Lin

Jerry Lin grew up in Taiwan with a curiosity for how matter transforms. He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Zhejiang University in 1982, then completed a master’s (1985) and a doctorate (1988) that deepened his grasp of molecular interactions. In 2000 he arrived in New York City, first as a server in a Japanese restaurant, then as a line cook learning the chemistry of flavor. The kitchen’s precision sparked his interest in scent as another medium of experience. By the mid‑2000s he began experimenting with essential oils and synthetics in a modest studio, applying his engineering training to balance volatility and longevity. His first public recognition arrived in 2023 when he captured the artisan prize at the Art and Olfaction Awards, marking him as the second Taiwanese perfumer honored by the competition. The award validated a path that blends scientific rigor with an artist’s instinct, positioning him as a rising voice in contemporary fragrance.

    How Jerry composes

Lin favors a structural backbone built on crisp citrus, clean aldehydes, and transparent musks. He pairs these with unexpected accents such as fermented tea leaves, seaweed extracts, or subtly oxidized woods, creating contrast without chaos. His process often begins with a single anchor note, which he refines through iterative testing, adjusting temperature and humidity to gauge stability. He prefers natural isolates that retain their original character, but he does not shy away from lab‑crafted aromachemicals when they fill a gap in the composition. The result is a scent that feels both engineered and organic, precise yet alive.

    Philosophy

    What drives Jerry

Lin treats each formula as a laboratory experiment and a story waiting to be told. He believes scent should evoke a precise memory while inviting the wearer to reinterpret it. His engineering background drives a methodical approach: he isolates a single molecule, measures its diffusion, then layers it with complementary notes to create a controlled arc of perception. He draws inspiration from the textures of food, the rhythm of city streets, and the subtle shifts of light at dusk. For Lin, fragrance is a bridge between the tangible and the intangible, a way to make the invisible palpable.
