The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Carlos Benaïm, the perfumer behind this 2020 composition, turned his attention to neroli: the essential oil pressed from orange blossoms. It carries the entire flower in suspension, sweet, slightly animalic, hauntingly familiar. The scent breathes complexity into its structure. Each layer reveals something new without announcing itself, green citrus dancing against the floral heart, cedar warmth grounding the composition. The challenge wasn't adding complexity. It was honoring the note's natural density while keeping it wearing. His solution layered neroli against green citrus and finished it with cedar warmth, building a structure that breathes.
Neroli is temperamental. Extract too much from the blossom and you lose its nuance; synthetic imitations feel flat and one-dimensional. The combination here, neroli anchored by jasmine, rose, and magnolia, creates a white floral heart with enough internal variation to read as natural rather than constructed. The green notes and citrus top don't compete with this heart. They frame it, giving the florals room to expand without becoming overwhelming. That's the real craft of this composition: restraint applied to a naturally opulent material.
The evolution
The opening hits fast. Bergamot, mandarin, a quick flash of lemon, then green notes arrive to ground everything before the citrus can turn sharp. It reads like cutting into an orange while standing in a greenhouse. Within minutes the neroli emerges, pushing the florals forward. The citrus never fully retreats, it becomes a current running beneath the jasmine and magnolia. The drydown belongs to cedar and musk. The florals fade but the warmth stays. On fabric, this one lingers well past the workday. On skin, it softens into something intimate by evening.
Cultural impact
Alchemists Neroli stands apart from Mediterranean-inspired fragrances that dominate the market. Its botanical authenticity offers a different kind of richness, one rooted in natural materials rather than heavy oriental compositions. The fragrance delivers depth without density, making it approachable for those new to floral-forward scents. Its sunny, open character feels distinctly different from traditional European formulations. The scent appeals to wearers seeking something genuine and unpretentious. Its green citrus brightness and delicate floral heart create an accessible entry point into the world of botanical perfumery.
