The beginning
The Botica 214 line arrived in 2020 under the direction of perfumer Caroline Sabas. Sabas chose Moroccan mint nanah as the weapon of choice, a mint variety with an almost shocking clarity, the kind that announces itself before asking permission. The counterweight would be Atlas cedar, Orpur-grade, from the forests of Morocco's Middle Atlas range. The name, 214, references the house's internal cataloguing system, a nod to the precision underneath what appears to be a simple fresh fragrance. From the first spray, the mint arrives with an almost immediate crispness, a cool wave that registers before you can prepare for it.
What makes the structure unusual is the timing of the hand-off. Here, the Moroccan mint performs for the opening act only. By the time the lavender and violet leaf arrive in the heart, the mint is already stepping back. The Atlas cedar and the amber Xtreme base don't wait for permission either, they arrive while the green heart notes are still present, layering in parallel rather than sequentially. The ylang-ylang bridges the transition between the cool green heart and the warm resinous base, keeping the handoff from feeling abrupt.
The evolution
The opening hits cold. Moroccan mint on the front, bergamot underneath, a flash of pear keeping it grounded. The cool sensation is immediate, not minty-fresh in the toothpaste sense, but sharp in the way cold water is. Two minutes in, the bergamot fades and the green heart begins to arrive. Lavender and violet leaf shift the register from cold to dewy. The mint hasn't left, it's still there, but it shares the stage now. By fifteen minutes the cedar has arrived without announcement. That's when the fragrance changes opinion about itself. The mint is still faintly present but the Atlas cedar is telling it to quiet down. The warm phase has begun. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its reputation. The mint is gone. The bergamot is gone. What remains is the amber, the cashmeran, and the tonka bean, a quiet, warm, slightly powdery base that settles close to the skin rather than projecting outward. Lasts six to eight hours on most skin types. On the second day, traces of cedar and tonka remain on fabric.
