The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Caos Calmo, calm chaos, takes its name from the oxymoron at its center. It's a fragrance from Natvm Parfum, a house that released Caos Calmo in 2023. The fragrance belongs to the L'Infanzia collection, Italian for childhood, and it translates that era into scent: festively lit streets, snacks shared with friends, the exhaustion of running until the sky turned dark. The brand describes it as a polaroid of afternoons that were soon over yet brilliant with life. Not nostalgia, exactly. More like the physical sensation of remembering. On skin, the opening arrives with a sharp vegetal snap, eucalyptus and pine needles crushed between cold fingers, the kind of green that feels less like a forest hike and more like a December evening walk past lit shopwindows.
What's interesting here is the texture contrast. Childhood joy gets rendered through a deeply adult palette: saffron and star anise, leather and rosewood, coffee and benzoin. The combination of eucalyptus and pine with caramel and tonka bean is the structural gamble: it shouldn't work as a comfort scent, yet it does. Cypress in the base anchors the whole thing, dry and persistent, the kind of woody note that reads like old furniture or the inside of a wooden chest that hasn't been opened in years.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are loud. Pine and eucalyptus cut sharp, almost medicinal, then saffron and star anise bring that warm-spice sweetness underneath. Ginger and lemon keep the opening from going heavy. It's bright, slightly bitter, and crisp in a way that reads cold-weather rather than summer. Around the forty-minute mark, the bright greens pull back and leather steps forward. Violet and lavender soften the edges. Apple and cardamom add a faintly fruity warmth, like mulled cider on a stovetop. Palisander rosewood sits in the middle, giving the heart a slightly resinous woodiness. This is the phase that smells the most like the brand intended: not childhood in a literal sense, but the emotional weather of it. The base takes over by the three-hour mark. Coffee and caramel arrive first, bringing that gourmand warmth, then benzoin and tonka bean settle into a sweet, resinous haze. Patchouli and cypress keep the sweetness from cloying, grounding the whole thing in dry wood. On skin, the fragrance reads close and personal after about five hours.
Cultural impact
Caos Calmo was released in 2023, part of a launch that included Colostrum and Big Bang!, giving the brand an unusually clear thematic identity early on with its L'Infanzia collection framing. The fragrance has resonated with collectors drawn to Italian niche work that takes conceptual risks. On the skin, it behaves like a quiet companion rather than a statement piece, projecting softly within arm's reach and becoming more intimate over the hours. The opening, that bright eucalyptus and pine snap, mellows within the first thirty minutes as caramel and tonka emerge, shifting the composition from crisp and green to warm and resinous.
