The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pataqueira is what the perfumer Verônica Kato reached for when Natura asked her to build something quiet and Brazilian at once, released in 2014. Kato's brief was grounded in clarity rather than spectacle, a request to translate a lived-in warmth into a bottle that doesn't try too hard. Bergamot and apricot do the greeting, lifting the composition with a sun-warmed brightness before settling into something softer. Pataqueira carries the conversation, lending the heart a green, herbal quality that keeps the florals from drifting into obvious territory. Cedar and amber close it out, grounding the composition without pulling it toward anything heavy or dramatic. The fragrance reads as a study in considered choices, where each note has room to be heard without competing for attention.
What makes the composition interesting is how few ingredients do all the heavy lifting. The apricot-mandarin-bergamot opening reads bright but not sharp, thanks to the stone fruit's natural roundness softening the citrus. Pataqueira sits in the heart alongside jasmine, which means the floral middle isn't just jasmine talking over everything; it has company, texture, a green edge from the native flower. The base keeps it grounded with cedar and amber rather than anything louder.
The evolution
On skin, it opens with a quick wash of bergamot and mandarin that doesn't overstay its welcome, followed almost immediately by apricot stepping forward, soft and slightly fuzzy, more like the fruit's skin than its juice. Jasmine arrives soon after. It's not the heady, indolic kind; it's cleaner, almost water-white, giving the composition a talc-like softness that catches people off guard. The rose in the heart is shy, adding a faint rosewater trace rather than anything overt. Pataqueira adds something green and slightly earthy, like crushed leaves pressed between fingers. As the hours pass, cedar and amber start pulling everything downward. The musk in the base blooms slowly, turning the drydown warm and skin-like. The fragrance doesn't announce itself after the initial opening, but it stays detectable on skin for a good stretch.
Cultural impact
Pataqueira occupies a specific place within Natura's broader fragrance offering. It's a softer, more floral composition compared to some of the house's spicier or woodier options. The fragrance suits a wearer who prefers warmth over drama and intimacy over projection. In the context of Brazilian perfumery, it draws on native botanicals while keeping the structure familiar enough for everyday wear. That balance between local ingredient and wearable format gives it a particular character, one that feels rooted without being obscure.
