The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Mercedes-Benz Club line arrived in 2013 as part of the brand's broader fragrance launch. Olivier Cresp was brought in to create something that felt worthy of the badge without simply borrowing its prestige. What Cresp delivered was a fragrance built around an unexpected tension, tart rhubarb against dry juniper, fresh citruses against warm ambroxan. The result doesn't smell like any other club fragrance on the market. It smells like someone who walked in with an opinion and left with yours. The opening bursts with bright citrus zest before the tart rhubarb takes center stage, its green, almost sour quality cutting through the air. As it settles, the dry juniper emerges, adding a resinous, slightly piney depth that grounds the initial brightness.
The heart of Mercedes Benz CLUB is where it earns its name. Juniper berries and cardamom sit alongside aquatic notes in a combination that reads almost gin-like, dry, slightly bitter, unexpectedly complex. The rhubarb in the opening isn't decorative, it's there to challenge. It announces itself with a vivid green tartness that commands attention before settling into the botanical complexity beneath. To say this fragrance won't be worn by anyone who doesn't want to be noticed. The ambroxan in the base doesn't rescue you from that sharpness. It deepens it.
The evolution
The opening hits tart and bright, rhubarb leading with a green, slightly bitter bite while citruses hover underneath, softening the edges. Ten minutes in, the heart arrives. Juniper and cardamom emerge together, giving the composition a dry, almost botanical quality. The aquatic notes keep everything from getting too heavy, but they're not the star here. The spices are. Two hours in, the citruses have retreated and the ambroxan base takes over. Warm, slightly sweet, with patchouli adding earthiness underneath. The juniper doesn't disappear, it lingers, a dry reminder that this fragrance was never going to be polite. By hour four, it's skin-close and intimate. The tonka bean emerges softly, adding a creaminess that the opening never promised. This is where it lives now, close, warm, slightly sweet. Not the fragrance that walked in. The one that stayed.
Cultural impact
Mercedes Benz CLUB occupies an unusual position: a fragrance with the Mercedes-Benz badge that has a genuine point of view. The juniper-cardamom heart gives it a botanical quality that stands apart from typical aquatic fragrances. The rhubarb opening and dry juniper heart create a fragrance that asks something of you. The fragrance opens with a tart, green intensity from rhubarb that immediately signals this isn't a conventional scent. This is followed by the juniper-cardamom heart, which adds an herbal, slightly bitter complexity that rewards attention.
