The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
L'Eau Super Majeure d'Issey arrived in 2018 as the amplified counterpart to the 2017 L'Eau Majeure d'Issey. The name itself is a statement, "super" implying something lifted beyond the original, more forceful, more present. Where the first stayed within the waters of Miyake's minimalist tradition, this version pushed outward, reaching for something that could hold its own in any room without losing the brand's signature clarity. Perfumers Aurélien Guichard and Fabrice Pellegrin were given a clear brief: intensify without complicating. Keep the aquatic soul. Add weight.
The tension here is architectural. Marine notes and sea salt give the fragrance its cool, mineral backbone, that sharp, clean quality Miyake fragrances are known for. But clary sage and rosemary inject an herbal warmth that pushes back against pure coldness. Then cashmeran enters, a synthetic musky material that adds powdery softness, bridging the gap between cool and warm. Patchouli grounds everything with earthy depth, preventing the composition from floating away entirely. The result is a fragrance that feels both refreshing and grounded, like standing on a rocky shore where the air is crisp but the ground beneath you is solid.
The evolution
The opening hits like stepping out of cold water into salt air. Rosemary and clary sage provide an immediate herbal lift, sharp and almost medicinal for the first five minutes. Then the marine accord takes over, but this isn't the sweet, sunscreen aquatic of the nineties, this is mineral and austere, like wet stone. Cashmeran smooths the transition, adding a velvety softness that prevents harshness. By the heart, the sea salt and patchouli create a warm, slightly animal quality that wasn't obvious at first spray. The drydown is where Super Majeure earns its name. The Madagascar vanilla arrives late, blending with smoke and leather into something unexpectedly intimate. Not sweet vanilla, dry, almost smoky vanilla with leather underneath. The amberwood gives it resinous warmth without sweetness. On clothes, the leather and smoke linger for a full day. On skin, the vanilla base fades slowly, leaving a faint warm trace by morning.
Cultural impact
L'Eau Super Majeure d'Issey stands within Issey Miyake's long tradition of functional, thoughtful design. The fragrance draws from the same design philosophy that made the original L'Eau d'Issey iconic in the 1990s. Marine fragrances became a cultural phenomenon rooted in Japanese minimalism, where nature and innovation intersect. This scent embodies that movement, offering something original in a market saturated with predictable fragrances. Its blend of clary sage, citruses, and rosemary creates a distinct character that feels both modern and timeless. The fragrance connects wearers to a broader design ethos where simplicity and quality take precedence over flashiness.
