The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Charles Street arrived in 2011 as a masculine expression from Mark Birley, continuing the house's signature approach to fragrance. Pierre Bourdon composed this alongside the brand's founding ethos, that a signature fragrance should serve a man navigating London's most exclusive spaces. The 1996 debut established the house's direction, and Charles Street extends that work with additional complexity and depth. The name itself implies location: a London address, perhaps, or simply a street in the city that Birley knew well. The fragrance doesn't explain itself. It speaks quietly, confident in its composition, and invites you to discover what it has to offer.
The opening features coffee and nutmeg at the front. Angelica and carrot seed add a herbal counterpoint to the blend. The heart brings raspberry and saffron, introducing fruity and warm notes. Rose, jasmine, and tuberose appear alongside, adding floral dimensions that interact with the other elements. These notes deepen the overall warmth of the composition. The base incorporates leather, vanilla, amber, oakmoss, and patchouli. The composition shifts across these phases, with different elements taking prominence as the fragrance develops.
The evolution
The opening features coffee and nutmeg at the front, along with angelica. Carrot seed is present in the composition, adding its own character. The leather appears as part of the overall structure, working alongside the other elements from the start. Against it, the raspberry is present, adding a fruity dimension. The florals, rose, jasmine, and tuberose, layer in as the fragrance progresses. This is where the fragrance develops and reveals more of its character. From here, the drydown incorporates vanilla and amber, along with oakmoss and patchouli. The coffee remains present throughout the wear, providing continuity. The leather remains present throughout, contributing to the overall structure. The composition allows these elements to interact and evolve over time, with the various notes expressing themselves differently as the hours pass.
Cultural impact
Charles Street brings together leather, fruity, and floral elements in a distinctive way. The combination creates a fragrance with notable complexity and depth. The leather provides structure while the fruity and floral elements add dimension and nuance. This is a fragrance that offers a particular approach to masculine scent, one that values subtlety and composition. It works across different contexts and occasions, appealing to those who appreciate sophisticated fragrance design.
