The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jérôme Epinette designed Oud Saphir in 2015. The fragrance centers on precious wood, a refined oud that brings depth without heaviness. Fine spices and warm suede complete the picture, weaving together to create something that feels both luxurious and approachable. The oud here is smooth, presented in a way that emphasizes its precious qualities rather than its more challenging aspects. Soft powderiness runs through the composition, giving it a gentle presence that lingers without overwhelming. It's a fragrance that balances richness with restraint, making the oud note accessible rather than intimidating.
The suede note acts as a bridge between the citrus opening and the deep oud base, translating brightness into warmth without losing continuity. Instead of relying on smoke, incense, or resin to anchor the base, Oud Saphir uses birchwood, which adds a dry, slightly mineral edge that keeps the vanilla from becoming too sweet. The result is a composition that shares qualities with leather fragrances while remaining softer and more inviting. Powdery violet leaf reinforces this approach: it's floral, but it has presence rather than delicacy. The note adds texture and depth without becoming fragile.
The evolution
The bergamot arrives first, crisp, almost sharp, the only moment of brightness in the entire arc. Within minutes, it recedes behind something softer: the suede, already warming, already powdery. The pink pepper adds a faint spice, but it's subdued, more texture than heat. By the second hour, the jasmine emerges, sweet and white, threading through the suede like a ribbon. Then the oud arrives, not with fanfare but with persistence. It's dark without being heavy, joined by birchwood and bourbon vanilla in a drydown that settles close to the skin and stays. The vanilla and oud continue to develop, faint and warm, resolved on fabric.
Cultural impact
Oud Saphir offers the depth and warmth of darker fragrances while staying approachable, powdery, and collar-friendly. It brings the richness associated with oud to contexts where heavier implementations might feel out of place. The fragrance balances intensity with discretion, making it suitable for professional environments and close quarters alike.
